Michael Barr: Do you like drugs?
She: When I was younger, I used to dabble in a lot of trippier stuff and smoke as much weed as humanly possible. Eventually, I started drinking a shit-ton and weed gave me panic attacks. I haven’t actually smoked in about 3 years, and I’m doing my best not to drink heavily. I don’t really feel any desire to fuck with china white or pills either.
Michael Barr: How old are you and where are you from?
She: I’m 22 years old and originally from Daytona Beach, FL.
Michael Barr: Why did you start playing music, and how did you get into it?
She: I think the first song I ever remember hearing in entirety was “Blackened” by Metallica.
When my Dad was younger, he loved metal and was constantly introducing me to new bands. Later on, my Stepfather showed me Dr. Dre, Snoop, and The Beastie Boys. My Mom used to be big into Industrial as well.
Despite the exposure, I had to beg my family for instruments when I was a kid. They caved-in but weren’t thrilled about me playing at bars at the age of 12. I fought back and put them through some shit to make it happen. I think it made playing out so much more rewarding.
Michael Barr: How do you rank the music scene in Florida?
She: Some would argue that we have the best scene in the country, some would say that we’re high.
Michael Barr: What influenced your choice to create different music?
She: I was really going through some shit mentally, and also felt stagnant in my own world. Making “She” changed both of these.
Michael Barr: Where do you find the inspiration to create your music?
She: A lot of the inspiration behind my music, whether it be heavy or soft, comes from what I’m feeling.
I think of it like the blues ya know? Those songs are purely formed from the heart and soul, you can hear it, feel it. I usually write most when I’m going through heartache or when something in the world gets me heated enough. I feel like that makes the music genuine. People pick up on that shit.
Michael Barr: Who produces your music?
She: She is almost entirely produced by SHOT (Austin Coupe) and myself. We’ve been working together for years now and the flow is better than ever. I honestly hate working without him.
Michael Barr: How do you currently feel about playing heavier music?
She: I say this as someone making pop music but, the heavy music marketed to younger kids is so fucking fake and tired.
It’s so easy to leach onto something that someone else is doing and run with it. People on the outside don’t realize the difference in genres, and entire scenes. All they hear is screaming.
I think if you’re screaming, you better have a reason, and it better be something you’re truly convicted in.
Michael Barr: What music are you feeling at the moment?
She: I’m currently all over of the spectrum.
Anything from Purity Ring to Bolt Thrower.
I’ll jam the latest Bieber album and then jam Bloodbath.
Michael Barr: What are your views on politics?
She: I could go on all day about politics and what I feel is right for the world BUT here’s a synopsis:
Republicans scare the shit out of me and I’m tired of politicians using people’s fear against them for their own agenda. The system is biased to favor men over women, white over black, straight over gay. If you disagree, fuck off.
I’m progressive at the end of the day.
Michael Barr: What is your favorite city in the US to perform in?
She: First couple times I ever played LA are absolutely unforgettable. My first sold out show was in LA.
Michael Barr: What is the worst thing about Florida?
She: It’s a tie. FUCK MOSQUITOES AND FUCK HUMIDITY. Hottest shit in the entire world.
Michael Barr: What are the three biggest influences regarding your creative process?
She: When I see people working harder than the pact and pushing through their struggle, it makes me want to work just as hard.
Sometimes when I become depressed or even angry it gets my mind turning as well. I find myself way more motivated towards what I need to do.
I’m also inspired to create by a lot of older music and fashion. A lot of times revisiting the past can give me the spark that I need.
